After actions taken by dedicated supporters and discussions with Mercy For Animals, Canadian breakfast chain Eggsmart publicly announced that it had reached its goal of sourcing eggs solely from cage-free hens!

Chairman’s Brands, the parent company of Eggsmart and several other popular brands, is one of over 130 Canadian companies that have pledged to eliminate cage confinement for birds in their supply chains. The company joins well-known brands IKEA, The Keg, Unilever, and Harvey’s in completing their 100% cage-free transitions in Canada.

This news is major progress for birds. Thank you for helping make it happen!

Eggsmart cage-free

We’re making progress in Canada, but animals still need your help. Every day, hundreds of thousands of caged chickens suffer unimaginably—without room to walk more than a few steps or fully spread their wings. Learn more about the plight of birds raised for eggs and tell Burnbrae Farms, Canada’s largest egg producer, to commit to no more cages at BurnbraeHarms.ca.

Want to do more? The best thing we can do for hens and all farmed animals is to choose more plant-based foods. You can also sign up to volunteer for Mercy For Animals and become a Hen Hero today!

Food Tech Company Launches World’s First Vegan Pork Belly https://chooseveg.com/blog/vegan-pork-belly/ Tue, 22 Aug 2023 00:41:27 +0000 https://chooseveg.com/?p=23642 Is plant-based fat the future of vegan meat? Find out how this food tech company’s award-winning vegan pork belly is changing the game.

San Francisco-based food tech company Lypid says, “Fat is the key to make plant-based meat taste like real meat.” To test their theory, Lypid is rolling out plant-based products such as meatballs, braised pork belly, and pork belly slices made with their patented vegan fat, PhytoFat.

PhytoFat is made of vegetable oils using a special technology that gives the oils a higher melting point. As a result, Lipid’s vegan pork belly—which the company claims is the world’s first—sizzles, smells, and tastes like an animal-based pork belly. It can be sautéed, fried, or baked and is lower in saturated fat, sodium, and calories than traditional pork belly.

“By combining PhytoFat™ with a unique fibrous protein alternative, we are able to create a meaty, savory, lip-smacking pork belly experience,” said Dr. Michelle Lee, Lypid’s co-founder and CTO.

The vegan pork belly is currently available at restaurants throughout Taiwan, but Lypid plans to expand its collaboration with food service chains throughout the United States and Asia. Samples will be available at the upcoming Plant-Based World Expo 2023

Why Choose Vegan Pork Belly?

Pigs suffer unrelenting abuse from the day they are born. Piglets endure a series of mutilations. They shriek in pain as workers cut our their testicles and cut off their sensitive tails without painkillers. Mother pigs spend most of their lives in tiny, filthy cages. Constricted by metal bars on all sides, they can’t lie down comfortably or even turn around for nearly their entire lives.

A row of pigs in gestation crates at factory farm.

Mercy For Animals investigations have uncovered pigs shocked with electric prongs in their eyes, bludgeoned with metal pipes, kicked, and stabbed for minutes while still conscious.

But the good news is that people can live happy, healthy lives without harming pigs or other animals. With all the innovative plant-based products hitting store shelves and restaurant menus, eating plant-based is becoming even more effortless.

This realistic vegan salmon will have you doing a double take! Developed by Israeli-based company Oshi, the new fish-free product is set to make its U.S. debut later this year.

Oshi creates its vegan salmon using a patent-pending additive-manufacturing technology—also known as 3D printing. According to its website, the company is on a mission to “eliminate sea pollution and overfishing by crafting the world’s tastiest premium whole-cut seafood filets made exclusively from plants.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/CqfknWPqwsf

With its sights set on the United States, Oshi has reportedly partnered with “some of the best restaurants” in New York City to bring its products stateside later this year. Noga Bronsky, Oshi’s director of product marketing, explained:

The United States is one of the biggest markets for seafood, with salmon consumption valued at $50 billion. Oshi salmon is a delicious, safer, and more sustainable alternative that will enable consumers to have the same salmon experience, without microplastics, mercury, and harm to the environment.

On top of its U.S. plans, Oshi has also partnered with major European retailer Coop Group, aiming to distribute vegan salmon fillets in Europe in 2025.

According to Oshi, over 70% of fish consumption around the world can be attributed to whole-cut forms, such as fillets. Replacing these cuts of fish with plant-based versions could revolutionize the seafood industry!

Fish are individuals as unique and complex as animals who live on land, yet they have largely been left out of the many hard-won improvements in welfare standards. While Oshi’s vegan salmon won’t debut in the United States until later this year, you can still stand up for fish by trying some of the many delicious plant-based seafood products and recipes already available on the market.

Kraft is releasing three flavors of its new vegan cheese slices nationwide! Available in American, provolone, and cheddar, NotCheese will be rolling out through summer to stores—and vegan burgers—around the country. Look for them in the plant-based and dairy aisles of your local grocery store!

NotCheese slices are classic Kraft singles reimagined, made with water, coconut oil, modified starch, and chickpea protein. The tasty new offerings are the product of a joint venture between The Kraft Heinz Company and The Not Company (NotCo).

https://www.instagram.com/p/CuDDLWeBxw7

NotCheese slices debuted last year for a limited test run in Ohio, where they quickly became a hit. In fact, a reported 91% of shoppers interviewed shared overwhelmingly positive impressions of NotCheese. NotCo’s head of marketing and strategy, Katie Pekarek, elaborated on the test’s success:

The decision to expand nationally was based on our successful Cleveland test market that ran for 16 weeks starting in November 2022. Kraft NotCheese Slices quickly became the #1 branded plant-based slice in dollar sales.

According to Pekarek, “plant-based is one of the fastest growing segments in food and beverage, exceeding total food sales growth by three times.” This shift in consumer demand has not gone unnoticed from other major dairy brands.

Earlier this year, Babybel launched the first plant-based version of its famed wax-wrapped cheese. Bite-size and made with only a few simple ingredients, the vegan mozzarella cheese makes a delicious on-the-go snack.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Cs_htGQNh8W

Just last year, cream cheese giant Philadelphia launched its first “vegan Philly.” Today, Philadelphia dairy-free cream cheese can be found in original, strawberry, and chive and onion.

In November of 2020, huge dairy brand Boursin released a completely plant-based garlic-and-herb cheese spread. Bob Goldberg, founder and CEO of Follow Your Heart, said then, “We’re truly delighted to see this savory treat now available to dairy-free consumers and those thinking of taking their own leap into dairy-free.”

Firefighters in Brooklyn’s Engine Company 239 removed pork from their firehouse’s menu after the arrival of their unofficial mascot, Penny the Fire Pig. The adorable pink pig spends her guardian’s biweekly 24-hour shifts sniffing around the firehouse, taking naps, and greeting the neighborhood children.

Darren Harris originally adopted Penny from a farm in Virginia in 2021 for his seven-year-old daughter. Since then, Penny has also been embraced by his entire firehouse and the surrounding community, who often stop by to take her picture or just say hello.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CiXQxqfOneC

Harris’s coworker and fellow firefighter James McCourt described Penny as “easier to train than a dog.” Harris agreed with that view of pigs:

Their brain capacity, they get up to a four-year-old or five-year-old’s level in intelligence. So they’re smarter than dogs, a lot of people say.

When she’s not on duty at the firehouse, Penny spends her days relaxing in the backyard and on the deck of Harris’s home in Middletown, New York.

Pigs truly are amazing! They have been successfully trained to play video games and have excellent object-location memory. Pigs also form strong bonds with one another. Mother pigs sing to their babies as they nurse and use individual calls for each of their newborn piglets, who recognize their specific calls and come running to their mothers.

But pigs shouldn’t have to move into human homes or workplaces to prove that they are individuals worthy of care and respect. As the philosopher Jeremy Bentham said, “The question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?”

Want to take a stand for pigs and other farmed animals? Level up your breakfast with these six tasty vegan bacon brands, and download our FREE How to Eat Veg guide for more plant-based tips and tricks.

Three Las Vegas residents were driving on a busy highway when they saw a tiny piglet fall out of a transport truck and onto the road. According to witnesses, the truck was going around 60 miles an hour, and the eight-to-12-week-old piglet “tumbled about 10, 15 times down the side of the freeway.”

Lars Gradel, his work partner Rebecca Zajac, and her seven-year-old son quickly stopped their car and rushed to rescue the terrified piglet. They wrapped him in a towel and put him in the car, surprised to discover he seemed relatively unharmed. Gradel said:

We assumed that he would be injured by the amount of tumbles he took on the freeway, and it was going like 60 miles per hour. But surprisingly, he was OK.

A veterinarian confirmed the piglet’s age and said that he had recently been weaned from his mother. More than likely, he had been on his way to a fattening facility where he would have been fed for six to eight months before being sent to slaughter. Instead, Lucky the pig went home with Zajac and her son, Colton, living comfortably in their backyard for the weekend until he was taken in by All Friends Animal Sanctuary

Lucky will spend about five months in quarantine before moving to a larger pen. While he is currently just 18 pounds, he could grow to a massive 700 or 800 pounds. Originally destined for slaughter, Lucky will enjoy quite a different life. Tara Pike, founder of All Friends Animal Sanctuary, said:

Now Lucky’s going to be wallowing in mud and rooting around in the ground and digging little holes with his snout and eating watermelon and popsicles in the summer.

While Lucky’s story is a happy one, every pig deserves to live out their lives in freedom and comfort. You can take a stand for pigs—and all animals—simply by leaving them off your plate. Download our FREE How to Eat Veg guide to get started.
